The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services administers all training course and licensing requirements. Here's what you need to know to get started.
Step 1 — Take the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Course
It all starts with the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment training course at a center whose instructors are licensed by New York State. Following successful completion, you'll be issued a certificate — a requirement for the license application. Reserve your seat — classes run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturday, 8 AM–4 PM.
One red flag when comparing schools: avoid anyone offering this training in less than 8 hours — they likely lack proper licensing.
Step 2 — Get Fingerprinted
The NYS DOS requires electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGo. The fee is $101.25, payable to IDEMIA by money order or credit card. An IdentoGo office is conveniently located a short walk from our training center.
Step 3 — Submit Your Application
Your checklist:
- ✓ Completed NYS Division of Licensing Services form (DOS-1206-f-a)
- ✓ 8-Hour Pre-Assignment certificate
- ✓ ID (NYS driver's license or DMV non-driver ID)
- ✓ Fingerprinting receipt
- ✓ $36 money order to NYS Department of State
Your license arrives in approximately 21 days.
Step 4 — Complete the 16-Hour OJT
Within 90 days of being hired, complete the 16-Hour On-the-Job Training (Thursday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM) to finish the classroom requirements.
Step 5 — Renew Every Year
Keep your registration active with the 8-Hour Annual In-Service course, offered Monday–Saturday.
